Volunteer opportunities continue to grow at NUMCGene Tepley and Tutti Christensen have some things in common – they both like to be around people, they both have been hard workers for many years who are not ready to stop just yet and they are both volunteers in a new position at the New Ulm Medical Center in the Physical Therapy department. Christensen has volunteered on the medical/surgical inpatient unit for about three years, and Tepley is new to the volunteer program at NUMC. “I love it,” Christensen said. “I have worked since I was 14 and I can’t sit still. I like to walk a lot, so this position was perfect for me.” In their position in PT, Christensen and Tepley take care of guiding patients back into one of the many areas of the department when they arrive for their appointment, and they refresh bedding on the PT exam tables, when necessary. This takes some of the demands off the staff in the department. Tepley generally works two or three afternoons a week. “I really enjoy it – it’s a lot of fun just chatting with the patients as I take them back,” Tepley said. “I just felt that this would be a great volunteer position to do.” Tepley worked at the AMPI butter plant for 20 years, then for nine years delivering flowers for HyVee. After retiring from that last fall and spending the long winter without any “job” to do for the first time in years, he decided it was time to get back into the action. “My wife works at the medical center and she suggested I look into volunteering,” Tepley said. After attending a meeting for potential volunteers, Tepley found himself looking forward to the new position. “There are so many opportunities for volunteers in the building, and behind the scenes, that we really can match a person up to something that they will be interested in and enjoy,” said Missy Dreckman, volunteer services coordinator at NUMC.
