Lights of Love will decorate NUMC this holiday season

This year the holiday season at New Ulm Medical Center will have a special glow about it – coming from the NUMC Auxiliary Lights of Love Fundraiser.

Specifically, the enormous evergreen tree which stands just to the left of the hospital front entrance will be lit with donations from community members and benefactors near and far.

The Lights of Love Fundraiser will replace the Auxiliary’s annual Holiday Bazaar this year, said longtime Auxiliary member and former president Evie Hacker. “Many years ago, we used to light that tree during the holidays and it is a very impressive sight,” Hacker said.

People will be able to donate $5 per light or $75 per string of lights in memory of a loved one or as a living tribute for someone special. Proceeds will be used to fund project and services the Auxiliary sponsors at NUMC.

A tree lighting ceremony will be held Sunday, December 2, 2007 at 5 p.m. and a donor reception will be held following the ceremony. The reception will feature a list of all the donors names and those in whose memory or honor the donation was given. Prior to the tree lighting, there will also be entertainment by the Payne Street Singers.

“Many hospitals have been doing this type of fundraiser for hospice or other programs for years,” Hacker said. “We certainly have a need to continue the work the Auxiliary has been doing at the New Ulm Medical Center. The Auxiliary has been an integral part of the facility’s success for decades.”

In addition to the ongoing contributions the Auxiliary makes to NUMC, such as paying for cable television across the facility for the benefit of patients and knitting caps for newborns in the nursery, the Auxiliary has made important purchases big and small for various departments such as carpeting, equipment and furniture. In recent months, the volunteer organization donated special chairs in the inpatient unit to help prevent falls for patients, a ventilator for the Allina Medical Transport ambulances operating out of New Ulm and a new bone densitometer in Radiology.

Those wishing to donate to the Lights of Love Fundraiser can complete the form adjacent to this article and either mail it to the address listed or drop it off at the NUMC hospital front entrance.
