CPR initiative draws many business participants

A city-wide initiative to train 5,000 people in CPR by the year 2011 continues to draw interest from individuals, civic groups, smaller community groups and businesses. To date, over 2,500 people have been trained in CPR since the initiative began.

“I continue to be overwhelmed by the support of the community on this initiative,” said Deb Hertling, CPR Instructor and coordinator of the New Ulm Medical Center leg of the initiative. To accomplish the community goal, this project has joined with several partners, including NUMC, the American Red Cross and various independent CPR instructors from around the area. “Recently, we have had multiple businesses join our efforts by inviting us in to teach CPR.”

Some of those businesses include the Plaza Garibaldi restaurant, Hoffman Construction, Ridgeway on 23rd Assisted Living, Shelter Products, Citizen’s Bank, AMPI Corporation, and Gislason and Hunter Law Firm.

“The broad range of types of businesses that have been active in this initiative exemplifies the fact that people realize these skills may be needed anywhere at any moment,” Hertling said.

Each time Hertling presents the training for a group such as these, participants are given the option of taking home a CPR Anytime Kit, with the understanding that they will train five additional people. To date, Hertling has distributed approximately 150 CPR Anytime Kits at no cost. The kits are fully self-contained with a blow-up mannequin, face shields (so the mannequin can be used multiple times in a sanitary way), a book and a DVD to provide instruction.

All community members are encouraged to take part in the CPR initiative. The New Ulm Medical Center has CPR Anytime Kits available as well as a CPR “lending library” with equipment to train large groups of people. To check mannequins out of the lending library or to find out about CPR certification classes, call the NUMC Community Events line: 233-1990, option 1.
