Mercy ranks among ‘America’s Best’ Hospital receives national recognition for respiratory care

COON RAPIDS, Minn 07/16/2002--

Mercy Hospital ranks as one of the top hospitals in the nation for respiratory care, according to the latest issue of  U.S. News & World Report. In its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, the magazine ranks Mercy as the 29th best hospital for respiratory care.

“The high ranking achieved by Mercy Hospital is a tribute to the dedication, professionalism and collaborative teamwork demonstrated by respiratory care practitioners, RNs, physicians and all team members who provide care for patients with respiratory diseases,” said Charles Gensmer, MD, vice president of care improvement and medical director of respiratory therapy at Mercy & Unity Hospitals. “This has been achieved through a variety of multi-disciplinary care improvement teams including our ICU Care Improvement Team and Community Acquired Pneumonia Collaborative.”

The magazine’s July 22 edition ranks 205 top hospitals and medical centers, winnowed down from 6,045 facilities, in 17 specialties. The ranking criteria includes affiliation with a medical school, availability of medical technology, volume, reputation, mortality, and a group of care-related factors, such as nursing, technology of services and discharge planning.

U.S. News has done this survey for the past 13 years. National Jewish Center in Denver, The Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital led the respiratory care list. Hennepin County Medical Center (46th) was the only other Twin Cities hospital ranked in the top 50 for that specialty area.

Mercy & Unity Hospitals, located in Coon Rapids and Fridley, are non-profit hospitals that serve the northern Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Mercy & Unity respond to a wide range of health care needs with specialty services including behavioral health, cardiac care, emergency, obesity intervention, oncology, orthopedics, neuroscience and women’s and children’s services.
