Mercy Hospital receives two national leadership awardsCOON RAPIDS, Minn. 05/05/2008--Mercy Hospital is a winner of two VHA Leadership Awards for supply chain management improvement. The awards were given in two categories: distribution, logistics and inventory management; and innovation and creativity. "Even though the employees who were responsible for these awards don’t touch our patients, the work they have done in these categories improves patient care," said Tom O’Connor, president of Mercy Hospital. "I’m proud of the way they collaborated with the nursing units, creating collegial relationships and continually improving work processes."
Tom O'Connor, president, Mercy Hospital The award applications were submitted by Mercy employees Colin Baird, manager of Inventory and Storeroom and Wendi Andersohn, senior data analyst on behalf of four departments: Materials Management; Family Birthing Center; Quality, and Supply Chain Management. Mercy is one of only 12 VHA member health care organizations nationwide to receive a 2008 VHA Leadership Award for Supply Chain Management Improvement. Mercy was honored at VHA’s Leadership Conference in Philadelphia on May 4. "There is a major component of these projects that impact the ability to have critical supplies available when we need them so staff members aren't wasting time looking for needed supplies. It allows them to focus more on patient care," said O’Connor. "And, supplies are the second largest expense category for hospitals - behind salaries - so controlling these costs enhances our ability to hire more staff and provide better patient care." "Every member of the community should be pleased to know that Mercy is among the better performing hospitals from an operational standpoint. We all pay into the health care system in some way, and we want it to provide health care that is both effective and efficient," said Scott Downing, group senior vice president at VHA.
