United Hospital Cancer Care receives Outstanding Achievement Award Program one of only 66 programs nationwide to win recognition in 2007
ST. PAUL 06/20/2008--United Hospital's Cancer Care Services program has been honored with the American College of Surgeon's prestigious Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award for 2007.
"The Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes the significant commitment by United Hospital's administration and personnel for providing high quality cancer care to your patients, and in meeting and exceeding the standards set by our CoC Approvals Program," said Frederick Greene, MD, chair of the commission. "Your program is one of just 66 programs nationwide to achieve an Outstanding Achievement Award. We at the Commission are certainly proud of your achievements and applaud you for your outstanding efforts in our Approvals Program."
Established in 2004, the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the Outstanding Achievement Award following an on-site evaluation during which the facility demonstrates a high level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program — cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement. In addition, the facility receives a compliance rating for an additional 29 standards.
The 66 cancer programs awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award represent approximately 15 percent of the 453 programs surveyed in 2007.
"This award reflects the commitment we have at United Hospital to provide exceptional cancer care to our patients," said Linda Sershon, United Hospital's director of oncology services. "Our Cancer Committee provides the leadership and vision for our multidisciplinary cancer care team to go beyond usual expectations to deliver exceptional cancer care."
"We're dedicated to offering the best in cancer care," said Dan Foley, MD, United Hospital's vice president of medical affairs. "The Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award is recognition of the quality of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient care and we are proud to have brought the very best in today's cancer treatment closer to home."
Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer-approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:
- comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
- a multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
- information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
- access to cancer-related information, education, and support
- a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
- ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
- quality care close to home.
"The Commission on Cancer award is confirmation of what we already knew about our Cancer Care program," said David Miller, United Hospital's vice president of operations, "that our cancer care team is among the very best in country and we're proud to be offering this care to our patients."
In addition to United Hospital, Allina's Mercy and Unity hospitals earned the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award in 2006.
