MINNEAPOLIS 03/17/2009--Elizabeth Truesdell Smith has been named general counsel for Allina Hospitals & Clinics. "Elizabeth's education, training and experience are marked by two decades of focused and interdisciplinary commitment to ensuring patient care quality and building effective and integrated health care delivery systems," said Paulus. "Throughout her career, she has positioned herself to contribute with skill and compassion as a key voice on complex and important issues at the interface of law, medicine, bioethics, patient safety and public policy."

Smith has served as the vice president and leader of the Allina Law Department medical-legal team since 2007. She joined the Allina Legal and Risk Management Department in December 2000. Prior to joining the company, she practiced as a trial lawyer for eight years with a focus on hospital and health law, medical professional liability and medical products liability litigation.

"I think the most important contribution I can make to Allina is to put my interdisciplinary approach to solving complex and compelling questions of law, health care, public policy, and bioethics together with the lessons I have learned directly from our patients, families, and our caregivers," Smith said. "This perspective and learning is the touchstone against which I will work with steadfast commitment and purpose to advise our executive leadership team, our Board of Directors and our care teams."

Prior to attending the University of Minnesota Law School, Smith earned a master's of public health with a health law and bioethics concentration from Boston University School of Public Health. She has worked in biomedical laboratory research at Harvard Medical School and in biomedical ethics at Boston University and the University of Minnesota. Smith graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College with a major in English literature and a concentration in pre-medicine
