New Ulm Medical Center welcomes additional psychiatristNEW ULM, Minn. 05/22/2008--New Ulm Medical Center is now offering expanded psychiatric services in both the outpatient and inpatient mental health unit with the addition of a second psychiatrist, Sumathi Vaidhyanathaswamy, MD (Dr. Swamy).
Dr. Swamy originally hails from India and earned her medical degree from Tirunelveli Medical College in India. She has practiced general medicine with a special interest in OB/GYN for over 20 years. She recently completed her residency in psychiatry at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, in New York City – an affiliate of Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Dr. Swamy has a special interest in treating patients with mental illness and is an advocate of better awareness of mental health issues. "Sometimes the challenge is to even be able to reach patients because they may not know they need help," Dr. Swamy said. "Promoting awareness may help family members of those with mental health issues recognize the symptoms and get them the help they need," Swamy added. Her change from practicing general medicine and women's health stemmed from lifelong observations of untreated mental illness in her native country and the harm it can bring to a family. The treatment has gotten better in India as it has the world over, Swamy said, due to increased awareness among medical professionals and the general population. Dr. Swamy has a particular interest in treating chronically, persistently mentally ill, such as schizophrenic patients, having worked with these patients in her general practice in India as well as during her psychiatry residency. Dr. Swamy and her husband Krishnamurthy Subramanian, a retired accountant, will be re-locating to New Ulm. Although she grew up in a very large metropolitan area, Dr. Swamy has worked mostly in small, rural (in some cases primitive) areas and is drawn to a quieter atmosphere. To make an appointment with Dr. Swamy, please call 507-233-1168.
