New Ulm Medical Center holds groundbreaking ceremony for new surgery centerNEW ULM, Minn 04/30/2008--The groundbreaking ceremony for New Ulm Medical Center’s surgery expansion and renovation was held Wednesday, April 30 at 4 p.m. at the medical center, 1324 Fifth Street north. The ceremony marked the beginning of New Ulm Medical Center’s construction project to address the growing and changing health care needs of Brown County. The $3.5 million project will create two new operating rooms and increase the size of an existing operating room. A variety of physician specialists perform approximately 1,800 procedures each year in New Ulm. The larger rooms will accommodate new technologies and equipment; and the storage and waiting areas will be expanded. “We’re committed to providing our patients with excellent medical care,” said Lori Wightman, president of New Ulm Medical Center. “This project addresses needs for both patients and our staff by creating a healing environment – one that is safe, private and provides comfort before, during and after surgery.” The ceremonious shoveling of earth marks a momentous day for New Ulm Medical Center and the entire community. “While our investment is in bricks and mortar, it allows us to create a new health care experience for patients, families, staff and visitors,” added Wightman. The new center is being supported with $750,000 in local philanthropy. The campaign is currently at 90 percent of its goal. The remaining $2.75 million will be funded by Allina Hospitals & Clinics.
