New Ulm Medical Center hosts CarFit event for mature drivers

NEW ULM, Minn 04/21/2008--The New Ulm Medical Center Occupational Therapy Department is hosting a CarFit event Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the medical center clinic parking lot. The CarFit program helps older drivers fit better and feel more comfortable in their vehicles.

Participants will be asked several questions; complete a 12-point CarFit checklist; and leave with recommended car adjustments, adaptations and a list of resources in the area. The entire process will take about 15 minutes.

As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, endurance, range of motion, size and height may decrease our comfort level and reduce our control behind the wheel. As a result, older drivers may need to find ways to cope with physical changes to make safety a priority. For example, automakers are designing vehicles that include seating adjustments, more visible dashboards, wider doors, easier seating controls and adjustable gas and brake pedals.

If you feel your vehicle is not the perfect fit, you don’t need to replace it. There is adaptive equipment that can be added easily to your vehicle to help compensate for physical changes.

For more information or to register for the CarFit event, call the Physical Medicine Department at 507-233-1685. This event is sponsored by the New Ulm Medical Center Foundation. CarFit is a national project of the AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
