J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice
Allina is seeking community support to build a state- and Medicare-licensed 12-bed residential hospice in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. This much needed facility will serve hospice patients and families from across the Twin Cities region. Currently there is limited residential hospice capacity in the Twin Cities. There are only four facilities, each able to serve six to eight patients. Many days all hospice beds are filled and many hospice patients who wish to reside in a home-like setting are not receiving that option and caregivers who need a break from caregiving go without respite.
In 2003, a Minnesota business man named John Wedum who had cancer and was facing the end of his life, received in-home hospice care from Allina Hospice. In his honor, the J.A. Wedum Foundation has issued a $2 million challenge grant to Allina Hospice Foundation to fund this 12-bed residential hospice.
Project summary:
The new residential hospice will be in a setting designed around the needs of patients, families and loved ones. It will have the appearance and welcome of a comfortable home.
Patient rooms will offer privacy areas and comfortable sleeping accommodations for families. Each room will include expansive windows, an entertainment center, comfortable chairs and an outdoor patio where families can enjoy sitting and reminiscing with each other.
A room for spiritual reflection and meditation will be included.
Living rooms, conference rooms and common kitchen areas will offer space for family gatherings and meals.
Friday, April 30 truly was a night worth celebrating as we took another step forward in funding the J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice, a 12-bed facility that will combine a home-like setting with professional round-the-clock hospice care.
The elegant dinner and auction, held at the McNamara Alumni Center, raised $141,858. Sponsorships, tickets, auction and raffle proceeds will be matched by the Wedum Foundation and applied to the J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice. Thank you to all who came out to support this much needed facility!
Congratulations to Adam Bebus, who won the Wall-of-Wine raffle!
